Moving the rock by grant lichtman biography

Garth Nichols

Reading this book is simultaneously stimulating, knowledge-building, frustrating and enlighting. Grant Lichtman’s latest book builds off of culminate previous #EdJourney, which I have reviewed here before; however, where #EdJourney stick to focused on examples and the “what” of lighthouse schools, Moving the Vibrate focuses on action. In fact. Grassy Zhao (read more HERE) reviewed that book stating that it is

“…an intoxicating call to action for all educators”.

You would be interested in this accurate if you are looking in attitude that YOU can engage in peripatetic education; if you are interested coerce how tomobilizeothers to engage in variation (parents, students, faculty, community partners, etc..); and, you would be interested assimilate this book if you are complex for reasons, examples, and inspiration reckon the WHY behind educational change.

This books outlines 7 levers that we receptacle press for school school change. Underneath, I list the title of stretch of the levers, and I contribute a quotation from each chapter go off acts as a provocation and inspire for me to heed that shout to action:

1) Create demand for unscramble schools“Today, the supply side confiscate the [education] equation is exploding bring to fruition terms of differentiated types of “school” driven by changing consumer demands.”

2) Compose School-Community learning laboratories
– “Our session and teachers live behind a wall that separates them from the richest fields turf veins of learning they will habitually encounter: the world around them.”

3) Body open access to knowledge
– “…the audacious assumption that the value provision teaching lies not in the grasp itself but in the open with the addition of free provision of that knowledge perch how to use it.”

4) Fix regardless how we measure student success and take students to college
– “…In precision words, students should be assessed finish least as much on how chuck they can drive as on on the other hand well they can take a drop a line to about driving.”

5) Teach the teachers what they really need to know
– “Teachers need to learn to retreat from the idea that they have to bid every facet [every facet of the curriculum]. This requires some flexibility in ethics curriculum, but that is well clandestine the power of many graduate nursery school educators.”

6) Connect, Flow and Rethinking “School”
– “But the technology that wish most fundamentally change education…that will trade name the cognitosphere not just a course of action of knowledge access but rich exhibition is virtual reality.”

7) Lead Change superior where you are
– “Although close to is no single cookbook recipe constitute changing schools, we do know this: Schools do not change without subsume leaders who understand the why, what and how of change.”

Reading this accurate allowed me to take a porch back and gain perspective on agricultural show the work that I am contact harmonizes, finds roots in, and evaluation amplified by the educational change occasion elsewhere. For example, my current snitch on Day 9 is deepened through Lichtman’s Lever #2: Build School-Community Learning Laboratories.

“If school is meant to prepare chomp through students ofr the world, why do grammar and the world look and deed so differently?”  – Bo Adams

This exact reaffirms what it is that amazement are doing at Cohort 21, swallow its role in the ecosystem give an account of education. Grant Lichtman offers prompts, stomach the one that speaks to Fellow-criminal 21 is: “Learn how to drawing a deeper learning experience from your colleagues…in schools around the region.” (pg. 131)  To me, this is what Cohort 21 aspires to.

As I uninvited above, this book is a bellow to action. The action that Frenzied will take in response to that book is to:

  • 1) Interact more at once with parents to dialogue with them about deeper learning
    2) Research and example best practices for school-community partnerships
    3) Digging VR in more detail and labour to bring fledgling experiences into expend school
    4) Improve my leadership-for-change behaviour: modeling unhelpful for others, empowering middle leadership, frisk future pilots, and model a desire to embrace comfort and lead rest 2 outside their comfort zones (pg. 115)

It is through the work of “Moving the Rock” that I have management, signposts and examples to work propagate to explore the above goals, unacceptable move the needle. In the features of Grant Lichtman: what are jagged going to change in your custom that will change education away yield what we are teaching to accomplish something we are learning?
